What is a domain name?

Other top-level domains are not available for general registration and are only used for specific infrastructural purposes, such as reverse DNS lookup or testing software. These are called.arpa Domains and are administered the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority, for the Internet Engineering Task Force.

The country-code top level domains (ccTLDs) are abbreviations for countries and territories. They consist of two letters. Internet service providers, and businesses that provide services to those regions around the world, use them.

Most domains have at least one recursive name server that handles the initial query from a user. The recursive domain server will then pass the request on to a authoritative name server. A authoritative nameserver knows everything there is to know about a particular domain, even the subdomains. The authoritative name servers then forwards the request on to the root server and TLD server, who handle any further requests from the recursive server.
