DNS Over TLS

website host

DNS over TLS is an internet security protocol that encrypts all queries and answers coming from the Domain Name System. It uses the Transport Layer Security protocol to protect users from eavesdropping and malicious manipulation of DNS data. For websites and servers, DNS over TLS is preferred to ensure the privacy and security for their users.

Protocol security of the IETF

DNS over TLS, also known as Transport Layer Security (TLS), provides full-stream encryption between DNS clients and servers. DNS communications can be intercepted and spoofed without this protection. The protocol can be found in IETF RF 7858. DNS over TLS is initiated by the well-known TCP port 853 and enables DNS servers to securely communicate with clients.

DNS queries can be sent via the Internet in an unencrypted form. This vulnerability has been exploited in real-world attacks. Several protocols have been developed to encrypt DNS queries. In 2009, the IETF made the first proposal to protect DNS communications. To evaluate various proposals, the IETF now has two Working Groups.

Low latency

DNS over TLS allows data to be transmitted between computers in a secure manner. The protocol ensures that DNS requests are encrypted when sent, reducing the latency of internet connection. DNS over TLS works with HTTPS and allows traffic through a tunnel. This means that DNS traffic will not be affected by HTTP layering, and it will be protected against on-path attacks.

Latency is the amount of time it takes to send a request and receive a response. This includes a DNS query, TCP handshake, secure TLS negotiation, and DNS lookup. Because the connection is already established, subsequent requests are sent less frequently.

Encryption of DNS queries

TSL encryption offers additional privacy and security for DNS traffic. This protocol protects DNS information from being intercepted, by third-party system such as a malicious site. While the protocol is still under development, more platforms will be compatible with it. Even so, not all DNS servers implement it natively. Alternative trust mechanisms can also be mentioned in the DoT specification.

TSL encryption of DNS queries provides the same security level as HTTPS websites. It protects DNS data against interception, manipulation, and man-in-the-middle attacks. DNS over TLS includes the TLS protocol in addition to the UDP protocol used for DNS queries.

It's easy to block

Websites are increasingly choosing DNS over TLS (DNT). It is a more secure way of connecting to your computer, but there are some drawbacks. It uses TCP port 853, which can be blocked easily with firewalls or port filters. It creates a measurable overhead, which lowers performance.

DNS over TLS (DNS over SSL) is a protocol that encrypts DNS requests, responses, traffic, and other information. It is designed to protect your online privacy as well as prevent the manipulation or eavesdropping of DNS data. It is supported on a growing number operating systems but not all of these use it natively.
