Open DNS Resolvers & DoS Attacks

website host

An open DNS resolver is a DNS server that accepts recursive DNS queries from any IP address on the Internet. This makes these servers a potential target for Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.

Domain Name System (DNS) is a key part of Internet infrastructure. It allows the correct resolution and identification of DNS names such as the domain name of a web page. The system is based on a set of DNS recursive resolvers and authoritative nameservers that process DNS requests from clients like browsers.

Typically, clients send DNS queries to their stub resolvers, who then pass the query along to a reverse resolver. The recursive DNS nameserver is then queried by the recursive DNS resolution. The answer to this query is returned to the client.

One of the easiest ways to attack a DNS resolver is by sending bogus DNS queries using the IP address of the victim as the source. Once the attacker has generated a large cached DNS record, the open resolver will then fetch that record and send it to the victim's IP address as long as the attacker continues sending fake DNS queries.

To avoid these attacks, configure the DNS server to accept only queries from certain IP addresses. This is usually the RFC 1918 IPv4 address area or the IPv6 global address block of an organization.

This can be done by installing a DNS firewall to restrict access. This can be achieved on the external interface a DNS resolution that spans both an internal and external networks or by restricting recursive DNS requests on the internal network only to those hosts within that network subnet.

Open DNS resolvers are a type recursive DNS resolvers that accept recursive DNS requests and resolve them the same as traditional recursive solvers. There is a difference between open DNS resolvers and ISP's default DNS. Some of these resolvers offer more robust or faster services. Others censor names based on certain policy settings.

Google Public DNS for example is the most popular open DNS resolution in many areas and is used to resolve DNS queries by more than one in five users. The company's reputation as a DNS provider and the reliability of its service are likely to have contributed to this popularity.

Cloudflare Public DNS Resolver also has many features which are useful for detecting malicious DNS activity. It can log DNS traffic such as query type and resolved NS records.

In this experiment, over one third of users chose an open DNS server as their primary DNS resolution. This number increased to 1 out of 3 when all the full resolvers were included in the list. This is a very wide spread use of these servers and indicates that a great deal of network service providers are using them as either their primary resolvers or backups to authoritative DNS servers.
